Overflow after intense rainfall can have devastating effects on the local landscape and water quality.

Historically, Northfield hasn't been classified as being in danger of drought, but flooding has caused major complications on several occasions. An excess of precipitation can lead to overflowing the local treatment facility, which results in the gates being opened and no water being treated at all. Water conservation isn't typically thought of as a preventative measure, but if implemented properly and on a large enough scale it can be used as an effort to reduce the demand of the local water treatment plant. Through the use of rain barrels, french drains, and a few other methods, the amount of water that the local water table has to handle at a time can be reduced to a more manageable level.
